Inked Terror: Five Horror Comics

It came from the woods. Most strange things do.

Comic books are commonly associated with superheroes and their costumed adversaries, but the horror genre holds its own rich, often-controversial history within the industry. It was horror comics who were the most swiftly punished by hand-wringing industry guidelines implemented by the Comics Code Authority, who were facing immense media scrutiny thanks to accusations of promoting what was considered to be “immoral” behavior towards impressionable youths and fetishizing violence. Unable to have their product handled by wholesalers unless they were approved by the Comics Code Authority but forbidden by authority guidelines from using the words “horror” and “terror” in their titles, horror comics were left with no choice but to comply with the CCA or else be effectively denied access to a mainstream audience; this later led to the demise of a number of the legendary EC Comics brand’s classic titles like Tales from the Crypt and Vault of Horror.

The genre would experience great change in later years; underground comics by publishers like Kitchen Sink Press emerged in the seventies and gradually grew in popularity, even attracting considerable talent. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund was formed to assist comic creators and the shops that sold their comics, and the 1982 revival of DC Comics’ Swamp Thing saw renewed interest and vigor in horror comics. The 1993 birth of the Vertigo brand led to the creation of horror comics marketed towards mature viewers, including Hellblazer and Sandman, as well as the anthology collection Flinch (more on that later). Eventually the Comics Code Authority’s literal seal of approval was quietly phased out in 2011.

This list discusses five horror comics from various eras in the industry, from the early-eighties genre revival to modern-day publishing.

There’s Always a Place for You Here: Seven Comics set in Arkham Asylum

“Sometimes…sometimes I think the asylum is a head. We’re inside a huge head that dreams us all into being. Perhaps it’s your head, Batman. Arkham is a looking glass, and we are you.”

With a name inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and a gloomy environment reminiscent of a Gothic horror film, the Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane–more commonly known as Arkham Asylum–is one of the most iconic settings in the Batman Universe. The majority of the Rogues Gallery have called it home, and some have even been employed at the asylum prior to engaging in full-time villainy. 2009 saw a revival of the institution in the Arkham Asylum video game, where players could explore Arkham Island and discover its many secrets, and throughout the years Arkham and its inhabitants have been depicted in various forms of media: animated television shows and movies, live-action films like Batman Forever and Batman Begins, both graphic and printed novels, and numerous other adaptions.

This list pays homage to Arkham as it appears in seven different comics, all of which share one single defining trait: an eternal hope to provide those who walk through the asylum doors with the treatment, assistance, and resources they need to live free of Gotham’s endless cycle of crime.

Welcome to The Gallery

gallery2

Hello, and welcome to my new website! The title Gallery of Capes is a play on Batman’s villainous Rogues Gallery and the capes superheroes often wear (although, as the popular saying goes, “not all heroes wear capes”). This site will be used as a platform for me to share my writings on various topics pertaining to comic books; over time I plan to write articles and essays discussing some of my favorite graphic novels and characters, in addition to creating relevant themed lists that other fans may find useful.

I also have a Tumblr account where I have been creating comics-oriented content over the past several years, largely related to Batman, Vertigo, DC Comics, and the horror genre.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my site, and I hope you enjoy my future posts!
